Student Guidelines

1.      Service must be performed for the community (parish and approved agencies) and not relatives.

2.      Contact the place(s) in which you would like to volunteer and ask if you may serve them. Remember that at least half of the required hours (5 for freshmen; 10 for other classes) must be performed for your home parish.

1.      Begin your service hours.  Keep track of them on the Log of Hours and Evaluation Form.  Note: You must have the date, hours, location, description of service and supervisor’s signature or your hours will not be accepted.  You must have the Log of Hours and Evaluation Form for each volunteer location you work at.  Turn in hours to your Theology teacher or the office.

2.      When you have completed your service work at that location, give your supervisor the Log of Hours and Evaluation Form.  Your supervisor cannot be a relative.  They should fill out the evaluation and return it to you or it may be sent directly to the school.  If they are returning it for you be sure they know that it needs to be turned in by April 28, 2008.

3.      The Prayerful Reflections will be organized and incorporated into the Theology classes.  More information will be given by your second semester Theology teacher in regards to details, length and questions.   It must be turned in to your Theology teacher by April 28, 2008 unless they have specified another date.

4.      Service hours will count for 20% of the second semester Theology grade.  The 20 hours will count for 50% of the service grade.  The reflection will count for 50% of the service grade.

5.      All forms turned in after the due date will result in a loss of a letter grade for each week late.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hayden’s Service Program

Is participation in the volunteer service hours a graduation requirement for Hayden High School?

No, but the Lord challenges us to make a difference and to help those most in need (Matt. 25: 31-46).  As part of our Christian education we role model after Christ and challenge our students to serve as Christ served.  Participation in the program is 20% of the Theology class grade.

How many times do we have to do 20 hours of service?

With the exception of your freshman year, each year you are at Hayden you will complete 20 hours of service.

Where can I do service?

We volunteer where Jesus tells us to volunteer keeping in mind the Corporal Works of Mercy.  A guideline to remember when choosing an agency is that it must be not for profit. If you have questions about a whether an agency qualifies check with the Service Program Director.

The Service Program encourages you to open yourself up to opportunities that you may not be aware of.  In addition we challenge you to participate in areas you may feel a little uncomfortable in.  This is part of the education process and the growth we need to take as Christians.

Helping family is always good but should not be considered service.  Rather, family is an obligation for which one should not expect compensation either monetarily or through school credit.

What hours that I do at Hayden can be used for my service commitment?

Half of your service requirement can be performed for Hayden in an approved activity.  The only approved activity is the PACE Auction.  Any other service to Hayden must be approved.

Can I do my hours in the summer?

Yes, just see the Service Program Director and get a Log of Hours and Evaluation Form for the following year.

Can I get paid for my volunteer hours?

No, Jesus didn’t get paid for performing miracles or telling parables.

What about a one time spontaneous opportunity to help a neighbor (like pumping out his flooded basement)?  Would that count toward meeting the 20-hour quota?

Yes.  Just record the hours on your Log of Hours and Evaluation Form and have your neighbor sign the log to verify your helping him/her.

Can I just perform all spontaneous service?

No.  The Service Program encourages students to seek agencies within the community that help accomplish the vision of our service program.  Try to commit yourself to a given situation, and responsibly complete your goal.  We want to encourage students to research and seek out organizations and agencies that are trying to meet the needs of the community.  By encouraging you to commit to a cause or location, we are trying to expose you to places in the local community that are already active in helping those most in need.
