GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Hayden High School requires 26 credits for graduation; beginning with the Class of 2011, 28 credits will be required.  Required credits are:

Theology:          Required each year.  Theology courses must be completed successfully.  Faith in Action does not fulfill a requirement.

 

English:               4 units are required.

 

Social Studies:  3 units are required.  Must include 1 unit of American History, 1 unit of World History, ½ unit of Government, and ½ unit of Geography. (Government and Geography are semester courses.) 

 

Foreign Language:    1 unit of the same Foreign language is required.

 

Mathematics:    3 units are required.

 

Computer Technology:         Must include ½ unit of Computer Applications I and ½ unit of Computer Applications II. (Computer Applications I & II are semester courses.)

 

Science:             3 units of science are required.

 

Physical Education/Health:             1 unit is required for graduation.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS

 

*Fine Arts:          1 unit of Fine Arts is strongly recommended.  This unit could come from Music, Art, or Theater.  *Beginning with the Class of 2011, 1 unit of Fine Arts will be required.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

A.  CREDIT FOR COURSE

One unit of credit is given for regularly scheduled courses which meet for the entire year.  Half a unit of credit is given for regularly scheduled courses that meet  for a semester. 

 

B.  SCHEDULE CHANGES

As classes are formed and staff hired and assigned on a basis of schedules created, no changes will be made after the first five (5) days of each semester.  Please select your courses carefully.  Parents are also asked to review the program in which a student is planning to enroll and signify their approval of such a program by signing the enrollment form.  Any changes made after March 31 will require a $20.00 fee.  The fee will not apply to schedule changes initiated by teachers or administration.

C.  CORRESPONDENCE (ON-LINE) STUDY

Students, with approval of the principal, may earn credit by correspondence from an accredited school approved by the State Department of Education.

D.  COLLEGE CLASSES

Those Senior students who qualify and receive approval can take courses for college credit.  A GPA of 3.0 or better is needed.   Courses taken at Washburn University constitute a two-hour block of time on our block schedule and MUST FIT Hayden High School’s schedule.   Courses are also available on site.  See the Junior-Senior counselor for more information.

E.   VOCATIONAL TECHNICAL EDUCATION

This program is open to Juniors and Seniors who have completed necessary requirements and whose schedule will allow them to attend Vo-Tech in the afternoons only.  Enrollment is by special arrangement with Kaw Area Vocational-Technical School.  The student must begin the enrollment process the year prior to entering the Vo-Tech School.  See the Vo-tech counselor for available courses of study.

F.  MAKE-UP COURSES

Hayden summer school courses will be available this summer. Courses will be determined in May based on demand.  Call the counselor’s office for further information.  Both summer school courses and regular school courses are available through U.S.D. 501 for Hayden students needing remediation.  Enrollment information can be obtained by contacting the Counseling office.  Courses may also be taken online at Hayden.

G.  PRE-COLLEGE CURRICULUM     

The Kansas Board of Regents pre-college curriculum for admission to the Kansas Regents universities consists of:

          ENGLISH                     4 Credits Required

          One unit of English must be taken for each year of high school.

          NATURAL SCIENCE           3 Credits Required

          Students must take three units from the following courses: 

          (At least one unit must be in chemistry or physics.)

Students must take one unit each of Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry.  If a student enters high school with Eighth grade Algebra I, that student will need an additional three units of math in high school to qualify.

          SOCIAL SCIENCES             3 Credits Required

          Students must complete the following:

·  One-half unit of World History

·  One-half unit of world geography

·  One unit selected from one or more courses in psychology, economics, civics, history, current social issues, sociology, anthropology and /or race and ethnic group relations

          One unit of computer technology is required.

 


Additional Pre-college Curriculum Requirements for Scholarship Applicants

As a Kansas high school graduate, you may be eligible for one of three state-sponsored scholarship programs.

To be eligible for one of these scholarships, you must complete all the required courses for the pre-college curriculum plus an additional three units, as follows:

This course will provide an overview of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church as well as a study of the Old Testament as salvation history. Judaism and discipleship are introduced as well.  The curriculum addresses student identity and responsibility while informing them about moral issues and the views of the Catholic faith concerning those issues.  Mysteries of our faith and liturgies will be covered.  Vocation and lifestyles are also discussed.

This course will investigate the history of the church.  Topics include Pentecost, Persecution, Monasticism, Cathedrals, Saints & Scholars, the Reformation (with an emphasis on the relationship of other religions to the Catholic Church), the Church and Revolution, Vatican II, the Church in the U.S., and other current historical events.

#864 NEW TESTAMENT & MORALITY

TEXTS:  Jesus of History, Christ of Faith; Your Life in Christ: Foundations of

            Catholic Morality

         

This course is designed to help the student become more acquainted with their faith through a critical examination of New Testament Scripture.  Students will also understand the value of the Scripture as a source of knowledge to establish a relationship with Jesus.  Issues of morality are also taught by showing how students are to make moral decisions using the Ten Commandments as their guide.

The social mission of the Church is exemplified in this semester course of community service.  Students will volunteer their services at any of several institutions in the city.  Students will need their own transportation.  This course does not count toward Theology requirements for graduation.

This Junior religion class will be covered in one semester.  Students will learn, discuss and experience different prayer styles.  The importance of Scripture as prayer and an active prayer life will be examined.  Liturgy & Sacraments will examine the relationship of the sacraments and analyze the meanings of all of the sacraments and their significance to all Catholics.

#867 CAMPUS MINISTRY

Text:  Friend for the Journey: A Peer Ministry Training Program for Teens.

 

This course is a step toward fostering and promoting the well being of Hayden High School as a community of faith.  Recognizing and drawing on the unique gifts of each individual, the course is a vehicle for constructing a foundation for peer ministry amongst the broader Hayden community.  Activities are aimed toward building an atmosphere conducive to the growth of individual, spiritual, and communal needs.  Students are commissioned to serve as campus ministers and will be engaged in enhancing the liturgical and spiritual life of the Hayden community.

#871 PEACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE

                    Living Justice and Peace: Catholic Social Teaching in Practice

         

This course is an application of the Church's theology and it’s threefold mission: to be herald, sign and servant of the gospel.  Catholic Social Teaching deals with the attitudes individuals should have toward society and addresses the problems of social justice.  Social Justice is the obligation of individuals and groups to apply the Gospel to the systems, structures, and institutions of society.

#110 INTRODUCTION TO THEATER & PERFORMANCE

          PREREQUISITE:  Speech, Debate or Forensics

                                                         

This course emphasizes the study of theater history, dramatic literature, as well as performance training in movement, technical theater and design, improvisation, and acting.  Students will analyze film performances as well as prepare solo and group presentations.  The Final will be a public performance of earlier presentations.

ART

#751 PHOTOGRAPHY B/W                                                        

ELECTIVE                ½ credit (10,11,12)

PREREQUISITE: Intro to Art or Basic Drawing & Design; grade of C or better

 

Students will learn how to use a SLR (single lens reflex) camera (35mm), how to look for a shot, and basic darkroom techniques.  This course requires work to be done outside of the classroom.  This class is a must for future photojournalists.  Students will need to purchase or provide their own 35mm SLR camera and will be purchasing film and photo paper at minimal cost.

#754 INTO TO ART; INTRO TO DRAWING & ART MEDIA

This course is a study of the basic elements and principles of art and design.  The course will serve as an introduction to drawing, printing, painting, ceramics, as well as other art forms.  Students must pass Intro to Art with an 80% (C), or better before taking any other art course.

 

#755 CERAMICS I

Ceramics I is an introduction to techniques of working with clay.  The students will experience hand building techniques (pinch, slab, coil, and combination), wheelwork, and glazing.  The students will learn a glossary of ceramic terms and how to fire pottery in a kiln.  They will also experience how to mine natural clay and prepare it for use.  Ceramics I is a semester course and must be taken before entering Studio Art.

#758 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY EXPLORATION

Students must provide their own SLR camera and will purchase film and photo paper at minimal cost.  Students will be encouraged to explore creative compositions and techniques that incorporate good elements and principles of design.  Students will make PowerPoint presentations using digital cameras.  Outside reading (photo history, etc.) will be a part of the class.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

#759 MOSAIC AND RELIGIOUS ART DESIGN

PREREQUISITE:  Intro to Art and Ceramics I; grade of C or better

 

Students will be working with ceramic tiles, glass, stones/rocks, paper, textiles/fabric, plastic, and other materials to create mosaics and religious topic art.  Knowledge of ceramic techniques (clay building, glazing, and firing techniques) is beneficial to this class.  Students will supply their own colored glass and mosaic tiles for projects.

#761 ADVANCED CERAMICS/CERAMICS II

          ELECTIVE                ½ credit (10,11,12)

PREREQUISITE:  Intro to Art  and Ceramics I; grades of C or better

     

Advanced Ceramics/Ceramics II is a more in-depth study in hand building, wheelwork, and glazing.  Students will be expected to learn how to load a kiln properly with bisque and glaze wares; they’ll learn how to fire up the kiln.  Clay sculpture and use of a variety of textures on clay surfaces will be emphasized.  Creative and imaginative projects will be encouraged.  Students will be responsible for ceramic history and ceramic reading assignments.  Primitive kiln construction and firing techniques may be explored.

#763 DRAWING AND DESIGN

This course is designed to increase the student’s powers of observation and ability to represent three dimensions on a flat surface.  The course will include drawing still life, figure drawing, portraits, and landscape.  Media the students will work with may include pencil, ink, markers, colored pencils, and mixed media.

#771 ADVANCED DRAWING AND DESIGN

Students will work to further increase observational powers while concentrating on various shading techniques.  The course will focus on figure, portrait, landscape, master artists and art history, and personal studies.  Mixed media may be utilized in various drawing projects.

#772 PAINTING AND COLLAGE

          PREREQUISITE:  Intro to Art; grade of C or better

     

This course is a study of color mixing, painting techniques, and blending of various paints.  Painting involves ones ability to draw with a brush.  Painting experiences may include still life, landscape, portraits, and abstracts.  The following media may be explored: acrylic, tempera, watercolor, and mixed media.  Collage is a painting that includes pasted paper, textiles/fabric, and other materials.  This is a semester course and must be taken before entering Studio Art.

#773 STUDIO ART AND DECORATIVE ART DESIGN

          PREREQUISITE:Intro to Art, Painting & Collage, Ceramics I; grades of C or           better

                                     

This course will include the use of familiar materials used in previous art classes plus the introduction to new materials and new problem solving techniques.  This class gives the student time to do in-depth studies in art areas of their choice.  Students must be self-motivated, have strong interests and appropriate behavior for an art laboratory situation that requires a lot of independent study and work.  Students will be required to put together a portfolio (actual works, slides, and electronic portfolios are examples).  These portfolios are intended to be used for art scholarships at colleges/universities.  The expense of portfolios will be the student’s responsibility.

 

MUSIC CLASSES

#702 HANDBELL CHOIR                                                  

ELECTIVE             ½ credit (9,10,11,12)

          PREREQUISITE:  Ability to read music

         

This class is open to 11 students who are interested in playing English Hand bells.  Experienced ringers and beginning ringers alike will enjoy learning sacred and secular repertoire to perform at school concerts and masses.  Must know how to read music, both clefs preferably, but not mandatory.

#705 BAND/DRUMLINE                                                     

ELECTIVE              1 credit (9,10,11,12)

          PREREQUISITE:  Ability to play a band instrument through previous band training at the elementary or middle school levels, or Teacher approval.

         

The band plays literature selected from all periods of band music.  The band functions as a marching/pep band during football season and basketball season.  The band will have 2-3 scheduled concerts per school year and will take field trips to area band functions.  For marching/pep band, students may be required to purchase necessary uniform items (for example: pep band shirt, marching shoes, gloves, etc.).  Drum-line open by audition.

#706 ADVANCED HANDBELL CHOIR

          PREREQUISITE: Ability to read music

 

This class is open to 11 students who are accomplished musicians and are interested in participating in a performance class.  This is a show choir that will perform extensively for school activities on and off campus.  Evening and weekend performances are also required.

 

 

 

 

 

#710 JAZZ ENSEMBLE

PREREQUISITE:  Teacher Approval & enrolled in #705 Band (beginning with the class of 2010)

       

Jazz Ensemble includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section instruments (bass guitar, guitar, piano, drums) and performs music from all of the various jazz styles.  Students will also learn basic improvisation techniques. This ensemble will perform at various times and places throughout the year.

#711 STRING ENSEMBLE

          PREREQUISITE:  Must have at least 2 years playing experience to enroll.

       

This class is open to all violin, viola, cello and bass players who desire an ensemble setting to learn classical, sacred and contemporary strings music.  The ensemble will play at the school concerts, out in the community and at masses.

#715 HAYDEN SINGERS

          PREREQUISITE: Selected by audition.

         

This group is a select ensemble that comprises the best vocalists of the school.  It serves as an entertainment facet of the music department singing varied concerts throughout the state for civic and community functions.  This involves day and night concerts and some weekends.  Students selected for this ensemble will be required to purchase the specified outfit.

Previous singing experience is not necessary. Music is selected from all styles of literature and various concerts are planned throughout the year.  Students will provide necessary outfits for performances.

The Hayden Dance Team Class will be a limited, tryout-based class.  Students will be involved in competition and performance dancing.  Students will create and implement various routines.  This is a high endurance class.  Students will be responsible for basic costs.

At this level students practice the four basic skills learned in previous levels.  They are challenged to produce more authentic communication, both oral and written.  Students read, comprehend, and analyze higher-level literary selections.  Through these activities, students continue to expand vocabulary and knowledge of culture and history.  Course work is completed on an independent study basis, more closely resembling the college model.  Two days each week Spanish IV students teach in the elementary schools where they are assigned to grades K-6 as needed by the individual building principal.

AP Spanish V will prepare the student to take either the AP Spanish Language Exam, administered each May, or the language placement exams offered in the foreign language departments of most colleges and universities.  AP Spanish students will complete an intensive grammar review as well as polish their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills. Course work is completed on an independent study basis, more closely resembling the college model.  Two days each week Spanish IV students teach in the elementary schools where they are assigned to grades K-6 as needed by the individual building principal.

At this level students practice the four basic skills learned in previous levels.  They are challenged to produce more authentic communication, both oral and written.  Students read, comprehend, and analyze higher-level literary selections.  Through these activities, students continue to expand vocabulary and knowledge of culture and history.

          PREREQUISITE:  None

          TEXT:  Ecce Romani Level 1

         

Students will learn the concepts of an inflected language through a comparison of English and Latin grammatical structures and vocabulary.  Students will read and write at an elementary level and develop an appreciation for the Roman culture and history through the study of a Roman family in Pompeii during the first century A.D., mythology, and the literary works of famous Roman authors such as Vergil, Cicero, and Horace.

Students will strengthen their skills in reading and writing through the study of intermediate level grammatical structures and verb conjugations.  Vocabulary will be expanded.  Students continue a more in depth study of the Roman culture and history through literary and supplemental activities.
