----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

State Scholars:

What does this mean?

1.        A student takes additional courses—past the Qualified Admissions Curriculum

2.        Must have a high ACT test Score

3.        Must have a high un-weighted GPA

(the  ACT test scores and un-weighted GPA are determined each year by the Kansas Board of Regents

Financial division)

So what is the advantage—may help in obtaining more money in scholarships from the college/university student plans to attend.   If the student qualifies for financial aid as determined by the FAFSA (government financial aid form)—the it could mean up to $1000/year for the student attending ANY college/university in Kansas (public or private)

What are the extra courses a student needs to take to meet the Kansas Scholars curriculum?

1.        English requirement same as Qualified Admissions Curriculum (QAC).

2.        Natural Science---must take Biology, Chemistry and Physics—strongly encourage to take a fourth year of science.

3.        Math—1 additional unit (for a total of 4 units)—in addition to Algebra 1, Algebra II, Geometry—need a fourth year selected from the following:   Analytic Geometry, Trigonometry, Adv. Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Functions and Calculus.  * Algebra 1 in 8th grade is accepted for KS Scholars Curriculum.

4.        Social Studies—same as QAC

5.        Computer Technology—1 unit required.  Requirements same as for those for QAC.

6.        Foreign Language –2 units required-- Students are required to complete two years of the same foreign  language.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Importance of the Qualified Admissions Curriculum:

Colleges use this to determine the eligibility of a student wanting to attend a Kansas Board of Regents  College.  They expect a student to have a least a 2.00 GPA for the subject listed under the QAC.  (They do not figure in any of the others)—The Board of Regents knew some students may not make a 2.00 GPA on QAC courses, due to a variety of reasons.  This let them to formulate 5 different ways a student may enter a State Board of Regents college/university.  They are:

1.       Achieve an ACT composite score of 21---automatically qualify.

2.       Rank in the top 1/3 of the high schools graduating class—automatically qualify.

3.       Complete the QAC with a 2.0 GPA—will qualify you.

4.       Apply for the 10% exceptions window each college is allowed—had to get.

5.       Complete 24 credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 or better at a community college or non-Regents (private or like Washburn) and transfer.

Additional important information:

Scholarships you apply for during your senior year, the agencies giving these scholarships do look at the type of courses you are taking, the involvement of the student with his community and school.  They want a scholar and not a slacker who coasts through his/her high school years.

Washburn English Comp class.

The Washburn English Comp class MAY NOT BE SUBSTITUTED for meeting the 4 unit QAC credits.   The syllabus they submitted to us, which we had to submitted to the Board of Regents, did not meet high school guidelines in the areas of sufficient reading or writing for high school students.   Hayden will continue to accept their course, (English Composition I only) for dual credit to meet our English department requirement for graduation.   This means if you go to a Regents college—make sure you qualify by meeting the guidelines for number 1 and 2 above.  A senior may elect to take this course—but it must fit our schedule.

Juniors:  If you are planning to enter a Military Academy, you must begin the process during the spring of your junior year.  See Mr. Rohr.

KAW AREA VOC-TECH SCHOOL

When we went to 4 X 4 block schedule, we had a number of students who went to Voc-Tech during their junior year.

This causes a concern, since we cannot guarantee that they will be able to graduate from Hayden.  They may not meet our graduation requirements—simply because they do not have sufficient time to complete these and our schedule is not tied into Voc-Tech.   The amount of time they spend at Hayden is exactly the same as before we went to the 4 X 4 block schedule—two hours in the morning.  If the student knows they want to go to Kaw Area Voc Tech—they should begin to plan in their freshmen year and make sure all requirements are being taken care of.   It will work with greater ease, if they hold off until their senior year as we have had them do before the 4 X 4 block schedule went into effect.

Hayden Graduation Requirements

4 credits of Religion

4 credits of English

3 credits of Social science :  (Geography ½ credit,  World History 1 credit , American History 1 credit & Government ½ credit).

3 credits of Science

3 credits of Math

1 credit of PE/Health

1 credit of Computer Applications

1 Year of a Foreign Language

½ credit of Speech, forensics or debate

1 credit of fine arts ( for students beginning with the class of 2011) Prior to 2011 will need only 26 credit to graduate and will not need the

                                                                                                     credit of fine arts.

Total of 21.5 required credits and 6.5 credits of electives  to meet graduation requirements

Student will have a chance to earn a total of 32 credits in four years.
