A HISTORY OF HAYDEN HIGH SCHOOL IN THE 2000's

2000

Richard Strecker became president in March, 2000. Adam Holden resigned as principal at the end of the AY 2000 year.

The new parking lot was finished in late November, 1999, adding about 100 parking places.
As of the end of June, 2000, building construction had progressed to the point that most of the walls and pillars of the bottom floor had been poured.

2001

Mark Madsen became the new principal in August 2000. Richard Strecker continued as president. The Catwalk returned after many years of absence.

As of the end of May, 2001, the outside building construction was near an end. The interior had much left to be done. By the end of July, there was some concern whether it would be done in time for the start of the new school year. The general contractor said yes, but he wasn't sure of an exact date, and the janitors would still have to clean the rooms and move in desks and other materials to make them ready for students and teachers.

Construction was completed in late August 2001, just days after the start of school. The library and office suite were totally redone and expanded. And 3 new classrooms were added with all the others in the main building refurbished. For the first time, the main building had air-conditioning! No more heat days!
The rest of the school year was rather routine with no construction to interrupt classes.

2003

The Catwalk became the Catbowl.

2005

Mr. Don Laird, long time teacher of Hayden and strong supporter and coach of many of its extracurricular activities, retired at the end of the 2005 school year.

Dr. Sara Aufdemberge, librarian of the city's Catholic schools, also retired after 17 years at Hayden.

And, sadly, Norman Misner, Latin teacher sine qua non, died in April.

2006

Hayden acquires a large yellow school bus.

2007

The Meitler Consultant's Group conducts a study of Hayden' past and present and forecasts a future course of action.

Sister Barbara Borders retires after 20 years at Hayden to pursue a different career.

2008

Hayden switches to a full block schedule in which half the 8 periods per semester alternate class days with the other half.

Bowling debuts as a team sport.

Volleyball wins state. So does boys basketball and boys golf.
