Fundamentals of the Faith

TEXT:  Understanding the Catechism (4 volumes)

This course will provide an overview of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church as well as a study of the themes of the Old Testament and their application to everyday living. Students will review the Mass, sacraments, mysteries of faith and liturgical year. In addition they will explore decision making and self-discipline; grace; choices and relationships that foster a Christian lifestyle; the importance of community; rights and responsibilities; vocation; sanctity of life and dignity of the human person.

Old Testament/New Testament (Theology II)

REQUIRED

PREREQUISITE: None
TEXTS: Written on Our Hearts - The Old Testament Story of God's Love
Jesus of History, Christ of Faith

The inspiration, interpretation, and prayer of the Old Testament will be clarified so that the Students can apply it to human relationships and law, personal and social morality, the value and dignity of all human persons. This course will help students relate Bible characters and their situations to their own lives.

This course is designed to help the student become more acquainted with their faith through a critical examination of New Testament Scripture and to help the students understand the value of the Scripture as a source of knowledge to establish a relationship with Jesus.

Christian Lifestyles (Theology III)

REQUIRED

TEXT: Christian Life Choices

The intent of this course is to assist the understanding of ourselves as unique sexual beings so the focus is on Human Sexuality to help understand which lifestyle is best for each of us and that we each have a unique vocational identity, religious, single, married. There is an emphasis on marriage as vocation and focus on policy, communication, family planning and prayer along with education in sexually transmitted diseases. Students will be exposed to the use of reason and argumentation in moral decision-making.

Church History (Theology III)

REQUIRED

TEXT: The Catholic Church, Journey, Wisdom and Mission

This course will investigate the history of the church. Topics include Pentecost, Persecution, Monasticism, Cathedrals, Saints & Scholars, the Reformation (with an emphasis on the relationship of other religions to the Catholic Church), the Church and Revolution, Vatican II, the Church in the U.S., and other current historical events.

Peace & Social Justice (Theology IV)

REQUIRED

PREREQUISITE: None
TEXT: Sharing God's Goodness: Christian Justice

This course is an application of the Church's theology and its threefold mission: to be herald, sign and servant of the gospel. Catholic Social Teaching deals with the attitudes individuals should have toward society and addresses the problems of social justice. Social Justice is the obligation of individuals and groups to apply the Gospel to the systems, structures, and institutions of society.

Faith in Action

ELECTIVE

PREREQUISITE: Teacher Approval

The social mission of the Church is exemplified in this semester course of community service. Students will volunteer their services at any of several institutions in the city. Students will need their own transportation. This course does not count toward Theology requirements for graduation.

Campus Ministry

ELECTIVE

TEXT: Friend for the Journey: A Peer Ministry Training Program for Teens

This course is a step toward fostering and promoting the well being of Hayden High School as a community of faith. Recognizing and drawing on the unique gifts of each individual, the course is a vehicle for construction a foundation for peer ministry amongst the broader Hayden community. Activities are aimed toward building an atmosphere conductive to the growth of individual, spiritual, and communal needs. Students are commissioned to serve as campus ministers and will be engaged in enhancing the liturgical and spiritual life of the Hayden community.
