How to become a Member of
Student Council
The majority of Student Council members are elected to their positions in the spring general elections. There are three tiers of elections held during three different weeks, usually in late April and early May.
The first set of elections are for the Student Body Officers – President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. In order to run for these officers, a candidate must be either a junior or senior and have at least one year of Student Council experience. The Student Body Officers and the Student Council advisor form the executive committee of Student Council. These officers are entrusted with the planning, organization, and overall leadership of the Student Council.
The second set of elections follow a week later and are for the Class Officers – President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. No previous Student Council experience is required to run for class office.
The final set of elections occur during the third week and elect the class representatives. Each class has 4 representatives.
Freshman Class elections are held either the 2nd or 3 rd week in September and all Class Officers and Representatives are elected at one time.
But what if I don’t get elected to Student Council and I still want to participate?
The 2002 – 2003 Executive Committee asked themselves just this question. They decided, after researching and asking other Councils around the state about their policies, that they would allow students from the student body to "work" their way onto Student Council. There are several requirements an interested student must meet in order to demonstrate their desire to become a part of the school leadership team.
Attend 3 consecutive meetings.
Work on at least one committee.
Write a letter to the Executive Committee explaining their desire to join
Student Council.
After meeting these requirements, the interested student becomes a full-fledged member of Student Council with the privilege of voting. However, all requirements, responsibilities and consequences as outlined in the Hayden High School Student Council Constitution apply, including the attendance requirements. Council members are only allowed to miss 3 meetings. On their 4th absence, they lose their position on the Council and their voting rights.
